I intend to partially enclose an existing alcove with a large arch inspired by the attached image, but I have questions regarding both material/construction and the seam between the existing and new wall.

Regarding material/construction, I'm considering building it with thick MDF (either thinner or grooved for the bend) and only minimally with studs, but I'm wondering what the expertise says about such a construction? Pros/cons? Alternatives? Plaster doesn't seem very convenient for the purpose.

One of the purposes of the construction is to conceal a shelving structure inside the alcove, as in the picture, so I intend to let it extend about 30 cm on each side. On one side, I will thus build out an existing wall by about 30 cm, and my other question is how to best resolve the seam between the existing wall and the new section to avoid cracking over time. What alternatives are there to reinforcing tape, or is there a filler that is more or less forgiving to constructions that might not be entirely 100% solid? The wall I'm "extending" currently measures about 140 cm, much of which is a doorway, and I've considered letting the panel material cover this part as well to completely avoid the seam. The current walls are made of brick and plaster.

How would you make this construction?
