We have bought a house (built in 1986) outside Umeå which, during the inspection, was found to lack a condensation barrier under the roof. When the inspector crawled up to the attic and lifted the insulation, there was no plastic. However, the previous owner had placed some type of bubble wrap that hung slightly loose under the metal sheeting (it looks like they tried to attach it where the metal meets the wood…). The house (which is really a vacation home) has only been used in the summer and maintained at a low heat during the winter, so there is no damage in the attic today. The inspector told us to replace the roof and install a condensation barrier. Now a company that was supposed to provide a quote for the work says that the vapor barrier should be on the WARM side of the insulation and not in the attic under the actual metal roof. Half of the house has full ceiling height, and the other half has a loft above all bedrooms, so there is only one wall that meets the roof. The company wants us to put plastic on the entire interior ceiling to capture the vapor and then install a new ceiling before winter so we can stay there without problems. Additionally, we should install large vents in each gable of the attic for proper ventilation. What do you think? Is this the best solution? Grateful for answers.
