Stone steps of an entrance with visible wear and texture, possibly limestone, seeking advice on matching stone origin such as Jämtland or Kinnekulle. Close-up of limestone steps showing texture and color variations, used in a discussion about sourcing matching limestone for renovation. Close-up of limestone steps with visible texture and patterns, possibly from a staircase. The stone is light-colored with subtle natural markings.

We are in the process of replacing a few steps in our entrance staircase and are wondering if anyone is knowledgeable about limestone. We would of course like to have stone that matches the one we already have, and I understand that you can tell the difference between limestone from Jämtland and Kinnekulle, for example. Where does the forum think our limestone comes from?

I would guess Öland. I've never seen gray stone on Kinnekulle. But I'm really no expert.

I believe the staircase is from the early 1900s, and Kinnekulle is definitely the closest. I wonder how far they transported stone in those days? :)

I think that largely depends on whether it is a simple or a lavish house. For simple houses, all material was sourced locally, for lavish ones from very distant places. I believe limestone was quarried at all the Västgöta mountains to a greater or lesser extent. I'm no expert, but I don't think there are that many. There are handbooks. Google it.
