Soon we'll be getting a new heat pump, and then one of our chimneys won't be used anymore. It's located in one corner of the house and has only one flue. It has frost damage above the roof and generally looks ugly and tall. Can we remove what's above the roof and put a cap on what's left inside the house and then put a roof over it? We're probably going to redo the roof this summer, so it would be nice to get rid of this before then. It would be nice to expose the brick in the hallway and preserve some history :) We have another chimney in the middle of the house for the kitchen fan and stove that we plan to keep and fix up. So no worries about that :)

Yes, it is possible to demolish the chimney above the roof and then seal the channels.

I would probably demolish the chimney down so that it ends just below the roofline, seal the hole up to the attic, and add insulation.

To demolish a chimney, a building application might be required, check with the municipality.
