I have had the old wooden floor in my house sanded and polished. Unfortunately, there are large gaps between the planks. Sometimes so large that I can get a screwdriver all the way down to the chip in the joist. There is simply no "bottom."

I will ignore the gaps where the tongue and groove are still intact, but how on earth can I seal the gaps where I can reach all the way down to chip, etc.? I want to seal these gaps partly to prevent a lot of cleaning water from running down into the insulation/chip, but how can I do that when there is no "bottom" to let sealant, etc., "rest on"?

Does anyone have/had similar problems?

Grateful for good advice! :)

Old wooden floor with visible gaps between the planks. Gaps are large enough for a screwdriver to fit through, highlighting renovation challenges.

Tarred oakum or oakum. Check with, for example, Gysinge. They probably have experience with similar problems and solutions that work over time.
