Hi. Need some help. We have decided to tear out the built-in wardrobes from when the house was originally built in '91. The problem is that we can't get the wardrobes loose.

An empty built-in wardrobe, partially dismantled, with a wire shelf inside and various small items on the bottom. Built-in wardrobes with exposed interiors, featuring shelves and hanging rods, in a room with partial dismantling for renovation and replacement with PAX units.

The single wardrobe is in our daughter's room, and there we thought of replacing it and installing a PAX 100 cm, which means that part of the wall needs to be torn down to make space.

In the master bedroom, our plan is to install 2 pieces of 100 cm with sliding doors. The problem is that we can't remove the old wardrobes. They are screwed at the top to a beam and on the sides, and the floor also covers the wardrobes, so we can't lift and pull them out either.

Is there anyone who has a good suggestion on how we can manage to get these out without damaging the walls too much?

The next problem is that the current wardrobes are 210 cm high, whereas PAX is only 201. Should we build a frame and place the wardrobes on top, or should we simply add more on the top and just slide them into position and screw them in? The frame for the doors will ensure nothing is visible at the top.

Best regards, Christopher

Go to town with the tiger saw and install a 236cm PAX instead, so you'll have a bit more space. Then place studs and gypsum/filler pieces against the ceiling and wall if needed.

Talked quite a bit with my father-in-law who has some building experience, and a reciprocating saw was an option we came up with. 236 cm would have been something, but I only have 234 in ceiling height, so that didn't work out ☹️

Last fall, I replaced two old built-in wardrobes; we simply sawed off screws and nails with a multi-tool and then tore apart the cabinets. Since then, I've bought a reciprocating saw, so that will probably be my first choice when I replace the next three cabinets.

I would have probably placed the new wardrobes on the floor, possibly propped them up so they are level with the floor, and then built the wall down from above. The question is whether it's easiest to remove all the drywall above the cabinets, tear down the old ones, and set the new ones in place before drywalling at the new height?
