Considering removing a load-bearing wall at home between the kitchen and TV room to prepare for a future kitchen remodel.

I have a two-story house with a basement and attic, built in 1938.

The opening will be 4.2m. Does anyone know of a good program to calculate a glulam beam? I saw that Moelven had an app for this. Does it work?

Or should I just go all out and use a thicker beam with side beams?

All comments about reporting etc. are not desired as I am aware of this and have made a building notification for this.

Seeking sizing assistance.

But I must say that it was a strange municipality. What did they approve if not the dimension of the beam?

Not so difficult, just fill in the fattest glulam beam you can find...
 
Moelven's program works well. It's just a matter of knowing what values to input. Is the opening supposed to be made on the lower floor?

Yep, it's on the entrance level, but I also have a basement, upper floor, and an attic that can be furnished, sat with it but not sure which parameters to input.
 
If someone here is going to help you with the sizing, you need to know the size of the upper floor and the placement of the wall. If it's just a load-bearing wall and it's located in the middle of the house, it's easy to calculate. If there are multiple load-bearing walls, it's a bit more complicated.

Then you also have to use the fattest beam. Otherwise, your statement in #1 about having made a report does not hold.

You're right about that, though I don't think the municipality will come and look at a wall that has been removed... It's just Swedish silly formality.

Now a constructor has looked at it, but my own calculations were correct, and the same dimension was needed :) what luck haha.
