Hi,

I'm not sure if I've posted my question under the right topic, but I need help/advice with a wall issue.

We have a wall between the dining room and kitchen that I want to take down. It's in the way, and I won't be able to see my small children when I'm cooking. We haven't moved in yet. We don't know if it's load-bearing, but it sounds hollow, so we think maybe it's not.

I wonder if there are others out there who have experience with taking down walls, both load-bearing and non-load-bearing, and who have tips on how to proceed, if you want to do most of it yourself. I've included a small picture of the wall seen from the kitchen. Behind it is the dining room. In the kitchen, you can't sit.

Thanks in advance!

Whether it is load-bearing or not cannot be answered from the picture; you need to see it on site.

If it is not load-bearing, you will need to remove moldings, the plaster, take out the studs, and then the hard part begins—trying to make the ceiling look good.

If it is load-bearing, it is often quite sensible to have a skilled carpenter take a look at it, but choose your carpenter carefully.
