The house builder left a pile of plinths on my property. I want to use these to build a deck. The problem is that they lack post shoes, instead, they just have a single simple rod inserted at the top. Can they still be used for deck construction or are they unusable?

  • Concrete pillars with metal rods on top of a pile, meant for use in deck construction but lacking brackets.
It works, of course.
But they look like big pieces? How big of a deck are you going to build? :)

It would be about 3x5 m, I thought. A plinth is 1.1 m high, so you dig them down to a suitable height, I think. I watched Byggmax's video about deck building, where they screw vertical thicker boards onto the post anchors. But how do you attach the timber to these, drill a hole and fit it onto the rod perhaps?

Yes, if you're going to have pillar shoes, you can drill a hole and press one down, maybe fill with a bit of concrete so it sticks.

What I mean is, is it possible to manage with just how the foundations look now, or are post shoes a necessity?

They look like sturdy pieces. It should work to cut the reinforcing bars and use the plinths as supports.

"Supports," does that mean just placing the wood on top without fastening it in any particular way?

I think it could be possible. Of course with paper in between. But how is the deck otherwise being built, span width? Height above ground?

About 1 m above ground, partially supported by a rock. 3x5 m in size.
