Hello all you happy carpenters and fixers out there.

Like many others, we have been renovating the house for a long time and saved the staircase for last. Now we're about to paint the staircase, which is a wish from my partner, but before that, we need to re-cover it, as the steps are tilting outward.

We are considering using 18mm BIRCH PLYWOOD BB/WG for the steps and pine trim for the stair nose, which will then be puttied and sanded, and finally painted in a gray shade.

I have a few questions that I hope you can help with.

1. Has anyone here renovated their staircase with plywood and how has the result been afterwards?
2. Use birch or pine plywood?
3. Is BB quality good enough, or should I go with something else?

Appreciate all the tips I can get.

/David

18 mm birch plywood is a fantastic material to work with. Even the quality you are considering. I believe it has 15 layers. I would skip a furunos and just round off the plywood edge. As a base for painting with covering paint, the birch plywood is superior. It withstands much more wear. Then, make sure the staircase is stable before the renovation so you don't have problems with creaking.
