I am sketching a floor plan for a vacation home that will have a loft. And a loft needs to be accessed with a ladder or stairs.

Stairs steal valuable space, and if they don’t, they become quite steep and not very child-friendly. Therefore, a ladder is out of the question.

My idea is to build a staircase that is about 80 cm wide but goes between an interior wall and a bedroom. One interior wall is towards the hallway leading into the living room, and the other side faces a bedroom. On the bedroom side, you use the space under the stairs for built-in storage with doors. You won't be able to see into the bedroom from the stairs as it will be completely closed off.

My thought is to get solid wood for the steps with risers in between. So when you walk up the stairs, you have walls on both sides until you reach the loft. On your left side, you will have a wall up to the ceiling with a handrail, and on your right side, there will be safety glass, like an L where the "long side" becomes the boundary between the loft and the living room.

So the question is, where can I get solid wood of the right dimension? I assume I need about 90x27x3 cm. One idea was to buy countertops and cut out the pieces needed. Or is there someone who sells complete steps? (and not just those silly renovation kits that are just a shell over existing stairs)

Then, how do I attach them in the best way? Can I buy ready-made stringers with the right dimensions that are built into the wall where the steps rest? Buy a prefabricated steel beam? Or should I frame it in some way?

Hit me!
