Hello,

I'm renovating a house and working on the staircase now. There was wall-to-wall carpet in the staircase which we have now torn away. Left behind was the glue, everywhere. To remove this, I first used an electric planer, then a paint scraper. Now everything is almost gone. But the smell from the glue lingers, although much less than when the carpet was removed.
The plan is to lay parquet flooring on the risers and treads, but first need to eliminate the smell. (Smells like a horse stable)

Do you have any idea how this can be solved?

Stairs with remnants of adhesive from removed carpet, showing progress in a renovation project to install parquet flooring, facing odor issue from old glue. Wooden stairs with remnants of adhesive visible on the steps after removing carpet; part of a renovation project to install parquet and address lingering odor. Wooden staircase with visible grain, previously covered by carpet. Glue remnants are mostly removed; next step is to address lingering odor before installing flooring.

Tips are welcome.. Should I use a primer or something similar? Or is there a product for this purpose perhaps?

The glue smell binds with the stair paint so just go for it.
Ps. I think the nice staircase should be oiled ;)
Edit you were going to have parquet (shame), let it take time to air out, otherwise you can seal it with e.g. shellac.

Thanks for the reply!
Yes, I had actually thought about that first, but the stairs are a bit worn unfortunately. (they look better in the picture :D ) Then I think the glue has gone into the wood in some places which makes it hard to remove, it will show through with oiling. That's why I moved on to putting parquet on the stairs..

Okay, that sounds good.. Like this one? https://www.lovelyhome.se/farg/inom...OAMI2DydcpwfVt7Aeu6Oq8qt87NswgSRoC-2gQAvD_BwE

Otherwise, you can just use regular paint and smear it on, then? That also binds the glue smell?

Proposed should be weekend excellent for this :)

Btw I'm also going to lay parquet in my stairs, you've gotten a liiiiitle further than me. Bought the materials around 2006 so it's probably time to start laying it soon.

Perfect, I'll go with that! One thought I had now, since I used an electric planer to remove the glue, but it's a bit bulky so you can't reach everywhere. This leads to differences of a few mm. There I thought of applying wood filler, maybe best to start with the filler and then paint on top?

Haha yes, you shouldn't say "later," time tends to fly then.. :D

Suspect that it is higher after the wall /sättbräda?
Are you going to glue the parquet?
In that case, I would probably make it easy for myself and plane off the equivalent on the parquet.

Exactly.. Yes, you could have done that too.. I'll try with a small level and see how much it differs. Exactly, it will be some kind of adhesive suitable for the purpose.
