Hello!

We have a number of 220 x 45 beams in construction quality leftover from our extension. I'm also a happy owner of a Festool plunge saw with a rail.
Now we're planning to build a ceiling structure where 95 x 45 is sufficient in dimension.

Is it worth the trouble to cut the beams we already have with the saw or is it better to buy new ones and save the wider ones for potential future needs? What would you do? How challenging is it to saw 45 mm along the grain with such a saw?

I have split 2 X22X95 lengthwise with a regular hand circular saw (needed 22X45 nail battens and don't want to pay 10kr/m) and it should be about as tough. It goes a bit slowly but it works.

Perhaps an argument for purchasing a rip saw? ;)

I would have ripped (if I didn't know I would need the wider studs). But I do have a rip saw as well. ;D

I have split leftover material, so my recommendation is to split. My experience is that it's best to use the material you have lying around and buy new when needed. There's so much "good to have material" lying around ;).

I agree with that. I only have a few hundred meters of different types "good to have" so far.

Thanks for all the answers!

Over the weekend, it turned out that we can borrow a klyvsåg, so we'll go with that!

I split some 45*225 to 45*195 last weekend with the ts55. It's not super fast but it works. I used the included 48 tooth blade. If you look on the inside of the lid in the systainer, there are pictures of different accessories including a coarse blade intended for ripping (if I remember correctly) :)
