I have a 6 mm wire that I need to splice to make it longer.
Is it possible and how do you go about it?
 
What is the cable used for, or rather, what forces should the cable withstand?

But as mentioned, it depends on the forces the wire needs to withstand, but the variant from Biltema (available in other places too) usually becomes strong if you use two per splice. There are very advanced splices that are used for rigging boats, but these are quite expensive.

Depending on the wire's construction, the wire can be spliced. How does the wire look?
Various types of wire rope with different twisting patterns and strand groupings, including 1x19, 7x7, and 7x19 configurations.

That is, how many strands, how are the strands grouped?
The most common are 1x19, 7x7, and 7x19 stranded.

But the best and easiest way to splice is to make a loop in each part with a thimble and a Talurit clamp.

If the original poster is asking the question here on BH, they probably can't splice a rope and especially not a wire. Hardly anyone splices a 6 mm wire either and instead replaces it :)

Talurit is good, but it requires having press tools or alternatively having a company press it for you, but then you might as well make a straight splice with a press sleeve and get fairly good strength, as it looks better than using thimbles.

If both strength and appearance are important, the best option is to find a rigging workshop that deals with rigs for sailboats, as they can do a pressing for a small fee. In Stockholm, for example, you can go to Benns Rigg, but just check with the nearest rigger.

I need to fell a tree and use a cable to control the felling direction. The cable I have is about two meters short of where I want to attach it. The tree is not very big, maybe 6 meters tall and about 25-30 cm in diameter. There might not be simple locks available for such strength, so it might be better to get a longer cable? (Even though I'd rather avoid it)
 
The locks are probably not the problem because if you loop the wire and lock it with two locks of the type shown in the picture from Biltema, the lock will hold. Then you splice by making a similar loop through the first one on the next wire and also lock it with at least two locks so it doesn't slip. Then whether a 6 mm wire holds for what you are going to do depends on the quality of the wire.

Why not use a rope instead? Much easier to handle.

6mm (133-strand) wire has a breaking strength of 2000kg
Wire with standing rigging (fewer strands, but thicker) holds up to 2800kg (breaking strength)
Tie a double knot between the wires, it will hold for what you need to use it for...
