We are renovating our dining room and plan to build our own tall baseboards and above these, install wainscoting.
We are thinking of installing a lower baseboard and then having about 20 cm of smooth surface before the upper molding that finishes the tall baseboard. For the smooth surface in the middle section, we plan to use some type of wood panel.
Since the beadboard we intend to use is 15mm, and the upper molding (which finishes our tall baseboard) will be a smooth wooden molding, we need a panel that is also 15mm. As we now look at what's available at hardware stores, it seems that only plywood is available in 15mm thickness.
Initially, I thought it might be easiest with MDF, which is completely smooth, but it seems to only be available in 16mm thickness.

What does the expertise say about this? If we are going to paint our tall baseboards with linseed oil paint, will the result be good if we use plywood?

A 12 mm board and behind it a 3 mm masonite, then you have 15 mm
