Is the stud freestanding or will it be built into the wall? One stud sounds too weak to me. Put two there and glue nail them together, and it will hold every time
The figure you mentioned earlier, that presumably applies to a stud that is completely freestanding? A stud that is supported by, for example, an OSB on each side anchored to the rest of the wall must have a completely different load-bearing capacity? More than double, I guess.
No, it is a rule that is built-in. A completely independent 45x120 can only handle 530kg, calculated on the same conditions as above. That is, a buckling length of 2.3m.
