I was wondering if someone with experience in dimensioning could help me a bit.

I'm going to build a conservatory.
Polycarbonate sheets 50mm as the roof.
It will be a sloped roof from an existing wall with a 5m span. 6m wide.
Would 50x180 (home-sawn) be enough?
Or do I need to go up to 200..?
Grateful for answers.

  • Red wooden house with a patio in the foreground, outdoor furniture, a barbecue grill, and a partially cloudy sky.
Which snow zone?
What roof pitch? Guessing at least 6 degrees

If it is zone 2.5, then glulam 56x225 is needed
Then the deformation is 11mm and the usage degree is 88%

Yes, it's snow zone 2.5, but you mean that all 6 longitudinal ones should need to be glulam?

For shape stability, I wouldn't have chosen anything else. With polycarbonate sheets, there is a high risk of leakage if there are too large movements in the timber.
Self-sawn timber is not included in the Swedish Wood's dimensioning table, so it's a bit difficult to compare.
But 5m deep is quite a lot. I live in zone 1 myself and have 56x180 with 5m depth, and it is just on the borderline in the table. But on the other hand, we never have any snow here.

If it was just a simple shelter roof, I wouldn't care so much, but a 50mm polycarbonate roof for a winter garden is not exactly cheap either. You don't want to get any leakage in there with an insulated floor and everything.
