I'm looking for help and recommendations regarding replacing a glulam pillar with a steel post.

I've searched around the forum but haven't really found a thread that matches my project.

My project is an extension of an existing house. The extension is small, 15m2 (Attefall) and measures about 4300X3740.

The idea is that the extension should be completely self-sufficient concerning the loads from the construction and roof. Therefore, I don't need to significantly reinforce the existing house.

I made a sizing calculation on byggbeskrivningar.se and chose to enter the dimensions for a freestanding carport as it was the best fit for our construction. Attached is the result.

To explain how the extension will connect with the house, I also attach a drawing. The "thick" walls of the extension are framed walls (170mm frame). The "thin" walls are windows/folding doors. Above the glass sections, there will be glulam beams.

In one corner, where the thin walls meet, a post needs to stand. According to the calculation from byggbeskrivningar.se, I can place a Glulam pillar of 90x90 and have a utilization rate of only 33%.

Now to my question! Can I replace this glulam pillar with a steel post of 70x70x4 or 5mm? Someone might ask why. The frame width of the windows and sliding sections is exactly 70mm, and then the post would be completely hidden from the inside and barely visible from the outside.

Yes, but you must fireproof the steel column, which can be done with special paint. A steel column in the form of a VKR tube that is 70x70x4 mm has more than double the bending stiffness (EI) compared to a glulam column of 90x90 mm.

It will of course be fireproof painted.

So if I understand you correctly, a 70x70x4 is more than sufficiently strong as a replacement for the laminated wooden post?
