Our pantry is under the entrance, the house was built around 1937. On the ceiling and a bit on the walls in the pantry, some mortar has come loose and the reinforcement is visible. Is it just a matter of knocking away the loose mortar and repairing with render mortar, or does the surface need to be prepared in some way before new mortar is applied?
How has the house been used by previous owners, with heating or as a cold cellar, nothing unusual about not heating basements in the past, it was expensive, and it was a food cellar. It looks like moisture marks on the wall, and peeling near the window. This is because there is moisture in the vault and walls, the irons rust, as they rust, the rust expands and bursts the concrete (it's the same problem as in bridges). First, you must check where the moisture or dampness is coming from, if there is any, clear away everything loose and plaster or install something new in the ceiling.
Thank you for your comment. It has been an unheated pantry since it was built. Drainage around the foundation has been done in recent years, but before that, there was probably none, and it has likely given way over time. It's on the north side, so it's darker and a bit damper. We'll probably knock off and re-plaster the holes. Also, we'll replace the windows and ventilation. Drainage is done now anyway.
YOU can make it stick better and stay, by drilling, plugging, using stainless screws, wrap some stainless wire around it so it becomes like a net or a chicken wire that is screwed on, don't hide clean off as much rust as possible on the iron
