Is there anyone out there with experience in securing cracks with lime plaster in ceilings? Can you screw or staple it, can you use some ingenious fabric, or do you have to re-plaster?

It should be possible to patch, as long as you hack away around the cracked area... But you may get a slight color shade shift even with new painting...
I would probably recommend, if you want plaster-like ceilings, that you spray putty the ceiling with special sand putty... ask a painting company about this....
but, of course, you need a better base than old plaster to spray on...
 
Here's how it goes; knock down the beam, repair with plaster mortar, glue on reinforcing mesh, and paint. We'll see if the old paint/plaster holds - otherwise, we'll have to screw up gypsum. Thanks for the response!
