A tip is that it is possible to use epoxy on both PE and HDPE; the secret is to lightly flame the surface, "flame treatment". This apparently changes the chemical structure and allows the adhesive to bond.

I guess that a bit of fiberglass+epoxy putty/epoxy adhesive would have fixed the tear without major issues.
 
Yes, by flame treating the surface, carbonyl groups (-R-CH=O) are created by oxidizing the surface. These are polar, and conditions are created for the adhesive to bond. However, it is a relatively uncertain method. One must experiment to find the right way to flame treat.
