Hello,
I have a basement staircase where there used to be a linoleum mat from 1966. I have removed it and with a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, I have removed the adhesive residues. So now the treads are bare wood.

The risers and stringers are to be painted white, but the question is what to do with the treads.

There's a door leading to the garden from a landing halfway up the stairs, so there will likely be some traffic with outdoor shoes.

The original plan was to whitewash and white oil, but that might be a bit too light and delicate.

My idea now is to make the treads look like oak. There is an oak handrail that I will try to match. But how do I do this?

First oil stain and then hard wax oil? Or is there another way?

/L

Wooden basement stairs with removed linoleum, partial sanding visible. A vacuum hose is present, suggesting ongoing renovation work. Wooden basement stairs with raw treads, adjacent to a large window. Sanding tools are visible, and painter's tape lines the edges.

I can't manage to paste a link. Google "Ellos trappstegsmatta". Maybe it would have worked?

Thanks for the tip. On the "plateau" by the patio door, I will probably have some kind of mat, but otherwise, the plan is to have the steps entirely in wood (possibly with some metal strip for slip risk).
