Hi, I'm in the process of removing wallpaper with a steam machine and the plaster is very loosely attached to the wall, with large parts having come off. See picture, there's now a 1x1 meter "bare" area. Is it still possible to fix this up or should I tear down what's left (again, when you gently touch the edges, large parts/panels move) and replaster the whole thing? I've never plastered before so I'd prefer to avoid it but I'm wondering about the durability here.

The wall is supposed to be skim coated, primed, and then painted. Will it hold if I fix the surface now or is it hopeless?

Knock on the plaster and remove the sections that are hollow (sound empty). Do not pry the plaster loose, as more will come off, instead chisel in the direction away from what should remain. Then you'll reach a point when it's easier/faster/cheaper/better to replaster the entire wall.
