Remove the riser but how to make the stringer nice

Hello

I was thinking of opening up our staircase and removing the risers and putting in child safety strips. The marks, or scars, from the risers in the stringer won't look very nice...how have you solved this? The risers are recessed into the stringer. Is it possible to fill them up? Someone must have done this before but I can't find anything when I search.
