Hello
I'm considering removing the center post of our entrance roof.
Does anyone have experience with this regarding load-bearing capacity, etc.?
Perhaps complementing it with a glulam beam or something else, if so, what dimension?
It's a Hjältevadshus built in 1982

Grateful for answers or thoughts

  • Front porch with white entrance roof supported by a central post, black house exterior, potted plants, and construction tools visible on the ground.
  • Front porch with three white support posts and hanging flowers on a black and white house. Construction tools and materials are visible on the ground.
  • Wooden framework under a porch with a lone central post, garden tools, and red flowers.
  • A white porch column supporting a black trimmed roof with a hanging basket of red flowers to the side.

There are no complications in calculating this. Do you have the possibility to find out what type of beam you have over the posts today or how it looks in general? Where in the country do you live? (snow zone). How far is it between the posts? (3.5 m?).

The entrance roof is not included in the drawings I have. Unfortunately, I can't access it without tearing off the panel. It is 2.6m between the outer posts, 120x90mm is the dimension of the post. Snow zone 2

Suspect that you have a ridge beam resting on the center post. It can be solved if that is the case, but you need to tear down more to see.

Roof pitch approximately 20 degrees
The center pole seems to go all the way up.

  • Roof angle approximately 20 degrees with wooden beams. Central post seems to extend upward.
It looks like there is a beam in the middle that the roof truss stands on. It can be removed if you have sufficient support at the ends. You may need to reinforce the roof trusses, but it is entirely doable.

Are there any other trusses in the middle of the roof, or are they only located at the ends?

Thanks for all the input
There are no more trusses than the one at the front. You're probably right that there is a lot of weight on the middle post because of the beam that goes out and meets the truss. It's hard to know what is sufficient because you definitely don't want the kids to have the entrance roof fall on their heads. In that case, the post will probably have to stay, unfortunately.
