I am renovating a staircase and have removed the carpet and am scraping off old glue. The problem is that I need to have flat steps when I apply the new material. At the front edge of each step, there is a raised edge. It is 3mm high and 10mm wide.
What is the smoothest and best way to remove this edge?

Question #2: I have scraped off most of the glue, but there is a layer left that is against the wood. Is there any product that can dissolve this? Or is sanding necessary? I can say that the glue turns into a very fine powder when you scrape it.

  • Close-up of a staircase step with a smooth, worn surface and a visible raised edge at the front, partially removed carpet, and scraped adhesive remnants.
Personally, I would have used the router with a straight bit with a bearing on it (edge router maybe it's called). Then run it as far as it would go and do the last 7-8cm on each side with either the saw or the sander.

Regarding the glue, regular glue wash should dissolve it. It usually has really good pull in it.

Electric planer or belt sander.
The belt sander can probably reach out the farthest
towards the edges.

Thanks guys...
I'll look into this!
