Hello,

I currently have a 1½ story house with an attached garage. The attic above the living area is unfinished, and there is a cold storage space above the garage.

I'm starting to consider making a room in the cold storage area. How do I handle the plastic barrier in this case? As it stands now, there's plastic in the garage ceiling that continues through the wall and faces towards the attic.

Do you simply frame and insulate the inside of the new room, or should you be meticulous and rip up the floor in the cold storage to tape it tightly? It seems like the first option might be the easiest, if nothing else.

Additionally, there is plastic in the floor down towards the garage ceiling.

Best regards,
Markus

I believe, with a little emphasis on believe, that in many houses delivered with unfinished attics, there is a vapor barrier and insulation in the intermediate floor at delivery.

Then I continue to think that quite often people don't bother removing this insulation and vapor barrier when they start finishing the attic.

And really... what harm could it do?
If both the upper floor and lower floor are heated, ventilated, and reasonably dry spaces, there shouldn't be any condensation on the plastic from either side, right?

You can wait for more answers if you like, but personally, I probably wouldn't worry about leaving the plastic in place.

But as you can read between the lines, it's not something I'm particularly sure about; personally, I'm preparing the intermediate floor of the house we're building by using paper instead.

The house opposite ours is being built by a carpentry firm, and they have installed vapor-tight and walk-through protected plastic in the intermediate floor, even though both floors are being finished at once, so they don't seem to be concerned either.

ok thanks, I thought it might become leaky, the small part that is in the garage ceiling in the joist layer is about 35cm in height, but at the same time I've heard that if you have a crawl space foundation, you don't put plastic on the floor, the moisture rises upwards?
