We are in the process of an extension to our 50s house and are going to create an opening between the existing house and the extension.

The house is built in brick with brick both on the inside and outside with an air gap in between.

My idea is to recess the beam and then make the opening below, but I am afraid there will be settling when I open up for the beam. Has anyone done something similar? What can be done to minimize the risk?

The hole will be about 3.5m. I have an architect and engineer who have calculated the beam.

Better to embed two U-beams in the wall, one from each side and one at a time. I think the designer should have already advised you on this?

So you have a full stone wall plus. Maybe 11/4-stone. The wall thickness excluding plaster is then about 12+6+12=30 cm. Choosing an HEA 160 doesn't seem particularly well-considered. Better with two beams that match the depth of the stones.
