Hello

I thought I would give it a try here since I have had a very hard time getting a good answer and solution to our problem.

We have a condominium that we bought new 4 years ago. Last summer, the wall between the bedroom and living room suddenly started rattling. We soon realized that this happened every time the bus passed by on the road 50 meters from the apartment (!) During the winter the rattling disappeared, which we later realized was due to the frost in the ground as it started again this spring.

The tips we have received suggest that a drywall has not been properly attached, causing it to become loose and start hitting a metal stud/beam. This sounds reasonable as it is a small metallic sound that occurs. We were further advised to buy self-drilling screws and put a screw on either side of the wall to secure the panel. However, this does not work because it is not possible to drill into the metal stud. The screw does not grip despite the use of a professional machine.

So, is there anyone out there who has any other ideas on what can be done? Nothing against public transport, but we are quite tired of finding out whether the bus is on time or not every 10 minutes by the wall sounding like it's going to shake loose...

Sounds like the stud is completely loose inside the wall and bends away when you try to screw into it. Or is it in more than one place in the wall?

Possibly, it should work to drill a hole and spray in construction foam. Just don't use too much because it will push the panels apart.

Thanks for the tip!

One of the carpenters we've spoken to says that from 2008 onwards a 10-year building guarantee applies. Does anyone know what was applicable in 2006 when our apartment was built? It feels like JM should fix this since it can hardly be our responsibility to investigate how the walls were built within the guarantee inspection period.

it actually occurs that there can be gypsum plasterboard scraps inside the wall. many put in the scraps because it insulates and it's nice when you want to hang something on the wall and drill, you have more *mass* to anchor into. these boards can lie loose and when the ground shakes, they *might* vibrate.

just a theory...

best regards,
estwing
