Currently renovating our dining room. The house is from 1923 and the walls consist of reed and plaster, so-called kloasongväggar if I understand correctly. We are either going to paint or wallpaper and are now wondering if we can use regular filler for smoothing or will the house become too airtight then? And if we choose to paint, does the paint need to be breathable?

Of course, you can apply putty on the kalkputsen. The paint doesn't have to be breathable, on the contrary, it is actually an advantage to use a dense wall paint of the acrylic type. This reduces moisture migration into the wall from the dwelling if it's an exterior wall. If it's an interior wall, it doesn't matter at all.
