For the first time in my life, I'm planning to try tiling. I have two walls in my kitchen that need to be tiled.
Wall 1 is partly a painted aerated concrete wall and the rest is a gypsum wall that I put up where the hole in the picture is. Unfortunately, the gypsum part is 2-3mm behind the rest of the wall.
Wall 2 is basically like wall 1 minus the gypsum. An aerated concrete wall with remnants of old mortar. The surface is quite rough, and at its deepest, it goes in almost a cm. I filled the wall with coarse filler but received advice from a carpenter friend to remove the filler since it might be too porous to tile on.
How do I solve this in the best way?
The 2-3 mm that the gypsum wall is recessed. Should I just apply more adhesive and use a deeper trowel? Should I try to smooth wall 2 with some kind of mortar or similar before applying adhesive for the tiling? I’ve also heard that primer is a must, especially since the concrete is painted. Is this correct?
