For future reference — I think it was wrong to try gasoline when soap didn't help. I think oil/dish soap and scraping with a fairly sharp knife helped best.
Either before, so you can throw them away without getting anything on you.
Or after, so you don't crumble everywhere while waiting for it to come off.
