My hatch up to the roof is right by the chimney/ridge. But there's nothing to stand on, and I'm afraid the chimney sweep will either point fingers or refuse to pressure test the soon-to-be-installed stove. Does anyone have tips on where to buy a small platform and how best to install it? The house has a metal roof. There is also limited space between the hatch and the chimney, so some construction that goes around the entire hatch to create some standing space would probably be preferable.

Just the same way it looks at my place and the chimney sweep had nothing to say about it when they approved the stove at our place. Call them and ask before you spend a lot of energy/money on this.

I would bring the chimney sweep for inspection without mentioning the issue of a possible platform - and wait and see. Don't wake up the bear... I have exactly the same situation myself with a roof hatch at the ridge/chimney without a platform and no chimney sweep has said anything about it.

The flue technician said they were picky in the municipality. I know not everyone is, but apparently, they are here. The risk is that the flue gets fixed, the stove gets installed, and I end up bankrupt. Then, when I want to have it tested, I'm told to fix a platform and come back. By then, it's -20 degrees outside, and Christmas is around the corner. One thought was also to have a platform up there for future rebuilding of the chimney. But yes, I'd happily skip that and do it in the spring!

Unfortunately, some people are very "particular." Now, this isn't the same kind of craftsman, but when the electricity for our house was going to be connected, we met a nice guy ;).

Right where the outside fuse box was, there was a small temporary depression. Everything was extended into the box, and the only thing that needed to be done was connecting the cables.

The working height was about 180-190cm when standing in the "hole." It wasn't a comfortable working height, I'm aware of that, but you can be "a little" adaptable :(.

Our idea was to lean a ladder against the wall, and I would hold it during that little time he was connecting.

When he showed up, he started IMMEDIATELY complaining about the height, and I presented my idea in a friendly manner. This wasn't acceptable, and he demanded that we build a proper platform for him to stand and work on, then he left to return a few hours later.

He got his platform, and we got our electricity. He didn't get any friendly treatment from us anyway >:(. He was likely satisfied to be a grump, and I'm still waiting for the day he's standing by the roadside with a broken down car ;), I'll stop, but not to help or anything, maybe just to go out and comment a bit, etc. ;D

I guess the chimney sweep might have opinions that you need a platform, but being so picky that he can't just make a note of it and push the pipe anyway sounds a bit drastic. It depends a bit on whether it's a completely new chimney or an old one that's just been fixed. Mine has been there for 50+ years and the whole neighborhood has the same construction. So if they were to require a platform at one house, they would have to do it for at least 70 houses simultaneously.
