How can you actually tell the difference between gypsum and chipboard when you knock on a wall (that is not concrete)?
Turn-of-the-century apartment, but the current wall between two rooms was put up later.
Wondering if I can just screw up String shelves that are now on a concrete wall with the same screws but without plugs? (Because you don't need plugs if it's chipboard, right?)
There are three shelves per String frame pair that need to hold pantry items, i.e., not as heavy as books.

The best way to find out what material is in the wall is to test drill.
For particleboard, you probably need wood screws, which are not used for concrete plugs.
