We are renovating the house we bought last fall. Among other things, we are replacing all masonite with drywall. In the living room, we have a fireplace. The wall around it is a brick wall (murstock??? I have never understood what a murstock is) that is plastered. My question is how on earth we fix the plastered wall so we can wallpaper and how to handle the joint between the plaster and the drywall being put up next to it. Should we just use filler or can/should we also put a fiberglass tape over the joint?
To clean the chimney breast from wallpaper, apply a thick layer of traditional wallpaper paste and cover everything with plastic, cling film. After it has sat overnight, you can pull off the wallpaper. Then wash the chimney breast.
You can plaster the chimney breast with plaster. In the joint between the wooden wall/gypsum and the chimney breast, you can apply a soft sealant.
If the existing wallpaper is well adhered, you don’t need to remove it before re-wallpapering; in both cases, the solution is to skim coat before wallpapering.
An alternative is to soak off the wallpaper according to previous tips and then paint the brick wall white, which in my opinion looks nicer.
Murstock is a word for the part of the chimney that is indoors.
