What do you say?
The chimney needs to be plastered and it requires 0-20mm to align with chipboard + 6mm gypsum.
The chimney sweep recommended gypsum plaster which I have bought.
Do I need to prepare with anything before I apply the plaster?

Cracked chimney wall needing plaster; exposed bricks and pipe visible. Renovation discussion on plastering preparation. Brick wall with an exposed chimney vent and rough mortar, showing unfinished edges needing plastering before adding gypsum plaster.

Take a spray bottle and thoroughly moisten the surface before applying the plaster. Mix the plaster so that it has a consistency similar to toothpaste, without running or moving off the wall.

Be careful that it doesn't become too thick as it cannot be sanded.

I will be tiling a part and painting the rest that will be behind the electric and wood stove, so the surface finish is not super important.
But what happens if you try to sand plaster?

The sandpaper breaks...

You need to grind it down with a diamond grinding disc on an angle grinder/grinding machine, and it creates an incredible amount of dust.

While the gypsum plaster is still a bit soft, you can go over it with a plastering float made of plastic or metal.
Just wet it a bit again with a spray bottle and smooth it out evenly.

Aha, it becomes that hard, thinking about plasterboard.
I will install three guides, when is it appropriate to remove them?

Of course, it's easier with guide rails if you want it completely smooth. You'll need to feel how hard the plaster is starting to get.
Use a knife and press in, it should be like chewing gum (chewed, of course) consistency when you remove the guide rails.
First score along the rails with the knife so you don't pull off more than necessary.

Plaster can be sanded. I usually use grain40 to get rid of any irregularities.
But if you want it smooth, you have to fine-tune afterwards.

It turned out better than I expected, thanks for the support!
The trowels and float are probably the same tools used when the chimney was built over 60 years ago.
Should the float be cared for in any special way? It's completely made of wood.

A freshly plastered chimney with visible tools, such as a trowel and bucket, used in the renovation process, located in a construction area. A hand holding a wooden plastering float against a white wall with visible wear and dust, suggesting use in masonry or construction projects. Tools on a stone table: an orange bucket, a wooden float, a metal trowel, and a bag of plastering sand on gravel. Blue shoe in the bottom right.

Stylish!
Just washing the stuff with water is enough
