Would love to have the steel beam (HEA 220 7.2 m) in the attic to avoid having it in the living room ceiling. Does anyone know if there will be a big difference in strength if you place it on top and attach it to the rafters compared to having it underneath?
 
Given that you have fairly normal saddle roof trusses and a cold attic:
Well, not really.
But in theory, you do get weaknesses if you use nail plates to attach to the rafters.
If you manage to tension some sort of strap under the rafter and over/around the HEA, the strength is limited by this component.
