Old pipe in floor with surrounding insulation. Query about the material, possibly asbestos, used in the insulation. Rugged and deteriorated surface visible. Old pipe with surrounding insulation material exposed in a concrete floor during renovation, possibly asbestos-based.
Cars forward the drain for replacement. Encountered an old pipe for either water or heating system that is not used today. Discovered some form of insulation around the pipe in the floor. What does the panel say, was it common to use asbestos in this type of insulation? Or do you, with more experience, see what type of insulation it is?

Is the pipe in the concrete, is there some form of paper there as well, previously they wrapped insulation and tar paper around pipes and cast them, it was not asbets, what you are showing looks quite coarse-grained, coarse-fibred.

Yes, the pipe goes into the concrete floor. Insulation and something dark wrapping, could be some form of thinner tar paper. Unfortunately, it's badly damaged so I can't see how it looked originally.

Then it's an older installation of the pipes, it was quite soft and fuzzy, not like today's which are a bit firmer, nothing unusual. But definitely not asbestos, rather, it was available in both a darker material (can't remember the name now) or fiberglass.

Edit: should be glass wool

Coconut fibers maybe? Asbestos is lighter.
In my home, they've first wrapped the pipes in some asbestos mat, then some brown fiber mat and then paper around everything.

  • Close-up of dismantled pipe showing brown fibrous material inside, possibly coconut fiber or asbestos wrapping, with pavement in background.
