Hello, we have an existing partition wall consisting of studs cc60 and single-layer drywall. We want to reinforce this with plywood as it will support some shelves and a TV.
Is it possible to put plywood on top of the existing drywall and then cover it with renovation drywall? This is to avoid the step of tearing down the existing drywall.
Or is it better to tear down the existing drywall and put up plywood + drywall?
What do you think, does it matter in terms of durability?

Doesn't matter, do what's easiest.
I would have kept the old gipsen, it will probably be a bit stiffer and it always absorbs some sound.

Just check what might become tricky with thicker walls.
Pipe penetrations near the wall, radiators attached to the wall.
Trim and floor and ceiling moldings.
Electrical boxes.
Regarding electrical boxes, there are extension rings for some, otherwise longer screws can solve the problem, but the device may be less stable.
Trims and moldings often require some fiddling and replacement, for example using clack trims.
Otherwise, I agree with John J, you can probably do it any way you like, the strength doesn't differ noticeably.

Mikael: It concerns only one wall lacking a radiator, I will solve the wall outlets with extension rings. In the rest of the room, it will be only renovation gypsum. Molding, trims, and ceiling moldings will be entirely new, milled with custom-made router bits.

I just wanted to mention it. There are probably quite a few people who started adding extra records to the old ones and only afterward swore about not thinking ahead.
