Hello,

I'm in the process of refreshing the apartment and need some tips.

I've decided to build a wainscoting panel using beadboard but have some concerns about attaching it, as the walls are made of some lightweight concrete that seems to crumble quite easily. Apart from the porous concrete, at some point during the 70s, a nice woven wallpaper was applied...

The big problem is that the panel will be stained, which means I want to avoid visible screw heads and the like at all costs.

The door frames will be replaced and are currently 12mm thick. The maximum I can step up to with these is about 21mm, so the panel can't build more than that, making it difficult to fit studs between the beadboard and the concrete.

The baseboards, which were mounted with finish nails, I managed to pry off with just my fingers, so nails unfortunately don't seem to be a viable option for me...

What do you think, PL400? Construction adhesive? Or some other genius solution?

Replies appreciated!

I installed beadboard paneling and used PL600. It worked well. I've done this in three staircases at home. The substrate was concrete walls and drywall. While it dries, you can lean a board against the wall so the paneling sits snugly.

Thinner nail battens that are glued up! You can solve the door frames neatly with a small infill, or alternatively "staircase" two frames on top of each other!
