hi,
I have tried searching around a bit on the internet as well as here in the forum but can't find any clear answers.

My question is how walls in townhouses are typically constructed. I am thinking specifically about the partition wall between apartments. What should one consider to meet fire rating requirements and sound insulation requirements? How well do lightweight clinker blocks versus timber framing systems work as apartment partitions?

Thanks in advance.

The wall is usually built double with an air gap in between so that the walls cannot touch each other. Two layers of 13 gypsum towards the room sides. One layer of gypsum towards the air gap. Insulation with mineral wool (mu) in both walls.

Stone is always a better sound and fire insulating material than wood and gypsum. But even here, a double-layer wall is preferable over a solid one, with the combined thickness, so that structure-borne sound (and also airborne sound) has a harder time passing from one side of the wall to the other.

The best result is achieved if the wall stands with each half on a floor that is not continuous. The same applies to adjacent walls and ceilings. That is, a 'generalfog', usually performed as an expansion joint.
