Hello

I am planning to build shelves in the storage room. 1m wide and 0.5m deep. How much weight can a shelf like that support if built from OSB without reinforcing studs except on the short sides?

Should one instead use a different type of board?

Thanks!!

Osb is terrible for most things. Including shelves. One meter is also quite long.

1 meter is a bit too much. There are ready-made white shelves but they need three supports per meter.

What would you have used instead then?

Without reinforcement, they’re likely to give in pretty quickly. I made them about 120 cm wide with a frame of studs underneath, i.e. also lengthwise. I think they work great up there in the attic, plastic boxes slide well on them.

thanks, how deep are yours?

Between 60-90 cm but as written and according to the link a sturdy frame of beams so I can sit on them. Cheap and good for the purpose, it's up in the attic where I wanted to get boxes and other things off the floor.

Raw tongue and groove works well as a shelf

Buy MDF instead, but without the frame, it's still too long with a meter.

Mdf doesn't have very good strength as a shelf, right?

Depends on what you compare it to. I have mdf in my storage. But you are right

I built a simple shelf with plywood and 45mm studs. It holds well for heavy binders, etc. This one is 100cm long and 40cm deep.

Built another shelf for storage, it can handle a lot of weight. It is also built with plywood and 45mm studs.

I have some shelves in the garage made of OSB, they hold up but not in the same way. They flex a lot and have warped in just a few months.

  • A plywood shelf with 45mm brackets holds blue folders, mounted on a white wall above a desk with a computer monitor.
  • Wooden shelf made from plywood and 45mm beams, filled with cardboard boxes labeled "Rusta," and some folded chairs stacked beside it in a storage room.
If you really just want to build with OSB, I imagine that a torsion box should become quite stable.
