Currently changing the drywall in one of the bedrooms and noticed that several of the studs had notches in them. I have no construction background so I'm not really sure what the purpose is, thought maybe someone here might have a good answer? My first thought was that it's to straighten a bend in the stud but then you're supposed to make deeper notches and even wedge a shim into the notch to straighten it out, right? The wall is quite straight otherwise.

Wooden stud with grooves in an insulated wall, part of a drywall project; question about the grooves' purpose. A stud with a shallow notch is shown, surrounded by insulation material. The user is unsure of the purpose of the notch during a drywall replacement project.

The rule has likely been used either as a base for a temporary workbench and thus has been slightly sawed, or someone has previously dismantled panel material by sawing. If one is to make any alterations to the standing studs (for flex pipes, VA etc), it should be in the middle of the stud since it is the fibers on the outside that bear the most, as I have been taught.
