I had a similar problem at home, 20 years ago. I didn't feel like calling for help so I played it safe and put in a solid glulam beam. About 400x115.

removed the middle wall that needed to go
Built posts/supports at the ends of the walls that remained.
Placed the beam on the subframe
Hung all the roof trusses on the beam using angle brackets.
 
Adding that sometimes one might not just be afraid of everything collapsing but also of boring cracks, etc.
 
The ceilings will be framed down with 2x2 and drywalled. So obviously I don't want a sagging ceiling that will crack the drywall :)
