New layer of concrete on old?

I have an outdoor concrete path. I want to make it smooth and nice. What type of concrete should I use and how thin can I lay it down without it cracking? If I divide it into sections that become a breaking point, how large should they be?

Were you thinking of installing tiles? Because you can't have flytfix as a surface layer.
