Hey!

I'm planning to redo our fence around the yard. As the pictures show, it's currently iron pipes set in a concrete base. I would like to have impregnated posts 70x70, about 120 cm high with horizontal slats. There's about 120 cm between the existing iron pipes, and the pipes are about 4 cm in diameter.

One idea I had is to cut the posts down by the base and fill the hole with mortar or some form of filler/adhesive and set a post shoe. Is there a risk it will become unstable if the mortar shrinks? Is there any other filler or similar that can be used?

Any other solution where the iron pipes are hidden/gone? I prefer not to cast footings on the base.

Maybe it's difficult. But cut the pipes a bit up then drill 4cm holes in the post and slide it over the pipe? Then it will stay in place and you avoid casting anything. The only tricky part is to drill straight and as deep as needed.

The thought has crossed my mind, but over the years the fence has taken its toll and many of the posts are not straight... Additionally, there is a section that is freestanding with 5 posts where all the posts are loose and can be wobbled... There, the posts can't be used at all!

There are also post shoes that can be bolted to the concrete base. These can probably also be placed where the cut pipe pieces end up to cover the pipes.

If it holds, it's probably the most convenient solution, as the posts are quite close together! I'll try it on the freestanding part and we'll see how it goes... Otherwise, it will have to be bolting post shoes!

Thanks for all the answers!
