Hello!

The summer building sprint is approaching and this year it's going to be an emergency room in an existing room... Wall cladding of OSB so it can be done quickly and taken down easily. It MUST be a temporary solution. (Have you heard that one before?) :D

To the point: To make it look a little "better," I thought I could router grooves into the OSB to liven up the surface a bit.
Now I wonder:
Is it smart to router into OSB?
How on earth do I achieve that beadboard look on the grooves?
I have no one to brainstorm with, but I realized that this forum contains a lot of knowledge so...

Thanks in advance!

I really have no experience with milling, but I've worked a bit with OSB and find it very hard to imagine that it can be milled sensibly. Since it consists of "flakes" of various sizes that tend to come loose when processing the surface in a slightly more forceful way (when screwing into it or sawing it), I am very doubtful that it would be possible to use OSB for the purpose. But someone is welcome to correct me if I'm wrong...

MDF is probably better to mill in.

Forget OSB milling!

Thank you for the advice!
If I switch to MDF, how do I achieve the beadboard imitation? And no, I don't want to buy ready-made paneling, it should be a budget build precisely because it's temporary... :D

I really hope I'm wrong... but...

You get the beadboard look if you have a proper router, not an overhead router but one that works more like a planer. There's an axle parallel to the surface and on it you mount several router wheels that have the "pearl"

There is something called panelskivan which is MDF that looks like pärlspont. But it is probably at least as expensive as real pärlspont. (which actually doesn't cost more than 90kr/sqm at byggmax)

I thank you for the tips! However, the options available in the form of the panel board and "the real deal" will be at least twice as expensive as my budget option! And it's a couple of square meters that need to be covered... :-(

Otherwise take plywood and mill into it. Works like a charm.

The panel board in MDF is "grooved" mdf which makes it bendable and it's probably not intended to be?

Are MDF boards really a budget option?
The ones I've seen have cost as much as plywood - i.e., an arm and a leg :(
So isn't regular nailed paneling cheaper even? :)

/K

Exactly! MDF costs more than beadboard, which costs more than the panel board, etc.. All alternatives are terribly expensive, so I guess I'll have to live with the lively surface un-milled OSB gives with a bit of white paint on... :) Thanks for the tips anyway!!

I was standing and looking in a clothing store in Boston today, and they had made it quite simple for themselves. The back panels of the shelving units (like bookshelves) were MDF milled with a V-groove. The same pitch and depth as tongue and groove but with a V shape instead.

It did NOT appear to be V-groove instead of tongue and groove, and you can find a V-groove bit everywhere for a router. I've heard about it before, but it was only now that I saw how well it turned out.

Well... if you're going to be like that, you could also mill two tracks at a suitable distance from each other with V-tool and round-grind what remains in between, and then you basically have a bead.
But it's tough to do in any large quantity with a hand router and you'd probably need the router on a track. (I would need it anyway, I find it difficult to mill sufficiently straight with a side stop or along a straightedge.)

eh, two pilsner and router freehand :-)
