Hello everyone.. we have a wall serving as a boundary between our and our neighbor's property. On our side, it's built with Mexitegel (which God should have forbidden...). It's likely that the wall was built when the house was constructed (1968/-69). We've been living here since -81. We are the third owners of the property. It was probably nice in the beginning... but now, due to the passage of time, the Mexi 'bricks' have started to fall out of the wall. However, 'only' the outermost 2-3 cm. In the middle of the wall, there is both cemented wall and even yellow 'real' bricks. The neighbor has some other stone material that seems to hold up. To my question.. is it possible to build up a new surface/'facade' on the wall? Or does it need to be demolished?
I think the most suitable approach is to chip away the Mexi 'brick,' clean it, and then build up again with something durable. I've been considering red brick since the house is built with this.

The mexitegel is likely just a decorative shell, they are rarely load-bearing. So, most likely, you can do as you describe.

Formally, walls require a building permit, so if you want to change their appearance by changing the surface material to something noticeably different, it requires a building permit. Simply repairing the existing wall, for example with new mexitegellike stone, does not require a permit. (But it's probably seen as the mildest form of "illegal construction" to switch to a different stone on an existing wall. Just as long as no neighbors are bothered.)

If you just inform those working with building permits that you are renovating, you might get a simple OK in response.

Got a response today... no... I don't need a building permit, as long as the wall doesn't get higher. For example, red facing bricks, frost-resistant also don't require a building permit in my municipality. Thanks for your posts and your interest. Best regards, Göran
