I'm in the process of tearing down some walls as part of a kitchen renovation. When I tore down the drywall, there was a metal stud along the chimney. The house was built in 1980. Does anyone know why a metal stud was placed there? Does it have something to do with wooden studs not being installed directly against the chimney? See picture.
