The man is going up to the attic where we have loose wool to place his dehumidifier and lay some plastic so that the dehumidifier only dries the area where we've had leakage.
Can he be in the attic with the hatch open without it being dangerous for our children? Is there anything we need to consider?

The children are probably not in the attic, just close the hatch after the old man when he's up there. There's no risk for anyone with the hatch open. Sure, a bit might come down with the old man and his clothes, but just vacuum it up.
